Ultra-Tough Nanotech Materials
1/31/2007 -- Researchers have used clay nanoparticles to modify a polymer material, making it 20 times stiffer, 4 times tougher, and able to withstand temperatures that are more than twice as hot. Chinese Company Launches Cotton Nonwoven
1/29/2007 -- Shenzhen, China-based Winner Medical Group Inc. has begun production of PurCotton, its new cotton nonwoven material and expects to ship the first order by the end of January. The first order—jumbo rolls of raw PurCotton material—was received from a leading Japanese OEM and long-term Winner Medical customer, which use the rolls of PurCotton to produce hygiene products such as wipes, wet tissue and alcohol swabs, which it will sell under its own brand name. EU SCCP re-examines sunscreen
1/31/2007 -- Advice on the safe use of ingredients for sunscreens has been released by the EU's scientific committee on consumer products (SCCP), which has been focusing on UV filters. The committee said camphor benzalkonium methosulphate is safe as a UV filter at concentrations of up to 6% in cosmetic sun preparations, but because of its “borderline margin of safety, its use in other cosmetics products is not recommended”. Also, the committee advised that phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid and its salts are safe as a UV filter (and other cosmetic products) at a maximum concentration of 8%. 1/29/2007 -- The deadline for paper and poster submissions for the 2007 Fiber Society Spring Conference is just two days away. Proposals for oral and poster submissions should be submitted by January 31. For the proposal format and other details, visit www.thefibersociety.org. Conference theme: Advanced Polymer Fiber Materials Science and its applications in novel engineered products. Dr. Peter Kaplan and Dr. Gerardo Callegari will attend the 15th NTC Annual Forum in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina on February 25-27, 2007.

Dr. Gail R. Eaton attended the National Textile Center’s Technical Advisory Committee meeting in Atlanta, GA on January 15-16, 2007. The Technical Advisory Committee consists of industry members who appraise and evaluate the current year NTC proposals for industry impact and relevance to NTC goals.

Dr. K. Ram Ramaprasad presented a paper on "Redefining Hair Baseline Parameters in Some Claims Work" in New York, NY at the Society of Cosmetic Chemists Annual Scientific Meeting & Technology Showcase on December 7-8, 2006. The paper was co-authored by Ms. Mythili Nori and Dr. Yash Kamath.
