In Sight--Forever Young: Antiaging Hair Care
4/2007 -- When most consumers think about aging, they think about skin. Contrary to popular belief, however, hair also ages. The visible sign of aging hair is lack of pigment, which is a result of hair follicles no longer producing melanin.1 Accompanying this decrease in pigment is a decrease in hair strength and thickness. Although there is no way to prevent hair from becoming gray and thin, there may be a way to slow the process by which it happens. To slow hair aging, researchers are turning to an ingredient that has been formulated into personal care products for quite some time—silicone. More from Cosmetics & Toiletries...

Solution to Bubble Puzzle Pops Out
4/25/2007 -- With a key mathematical insight, a pair of theorists has solved a 5-decades-old puzzle as easily as you might burst a soap bubble with a pin. The new result lets researchers predict whether a bubble in foam will grow or shrink. More than a mere curiosity, the mathematical relation could aid engineers designing foamy materials, biologists studying the architecture of tissues, and physicists probing how crystalline grains are arranged within a solid. A new breed of sophisticated, low-cost microscopes is enabling new vision for industry and academe

4/2007 -- Electron and scanning probe microscopes-those wonderful machines that allow us to peer at objects on the atomic and nano scales-have traditionally been large and expensive. Increasingly, however, toolmakers are introducing versions of these devices that are smaller (sometimes even portable) and less expensive than ever before as they begin to serve a potentially enormous market. High Court Raises the Patent Bar
4/30/2007 -- The U.S. government has considerable leeway to reject patent applications it finds obvious, the Supreme Court said today in a unanimous opinion on a case pitting manufacturers of brake pedals against each other. The ruling addresses the thorny problem for the Patent and Trademark Office of how to decide whether applicants have combined known elements to make a new discovery. But the court didn't go so far as to give examiners carte blanche to reject all patents that combine existing ideas, a possibility that biotechnology advocates had feared would come out of today's long-awaited ruling.
