Princeton,
NJ (March
1, 2002) --
To
commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Bernard Miller, lecturers
from Princeton, New Jersey, to Mannheim, Germany will discuss
the latest trends in the study of porous and fibrous materials
at a symposium this November. Dr. Miller was a world- renowned
expert in the fiber and textile fields, specializing in studies
of fluid interactions with fibrous porous media, fiber-containing
composites, and the thermal and combustion behaviors of polymers.
He lectured extensively and was the author of more than 150
research publications.
TRI
will contribute all event proceeds to the Dr. Bernard Miller
Scholarship Fund. The scholarship will be awarded to undergraduate
students for TRI internships in areas related to Dr. Miller's
research.
The event will use Dr. Miller's work as a touchstone, highlighting
some of his achievements and exploring avenues built upon
his pioneering efforts. Conference topics will have practical
applications for industries such as those involved with biomedical
and personal care products, protective clothing and sportswear,
polymers, and nanomaterials, to name a few.
"Dr.
Miller not only contributed significantly on a research level,
but he served as a teacher and mentor to his TRI colleagues
and students," said Dr. Gail Eaton, TRI/Princeton president.
"The education of young scientists has always been an
important part of our mission. In his spirit, TRI/Princeton
is establishing the Dr. Bernard Miller Scholarship Fund to
educate and encourage young scientists to continue to advance
his area of research."
In 1958,
Dr. Miller joined the Textile Research Institute as a Postdoctoral
Fellow for one year. He returned to TRI full time as a Senior
Scientist in 1966 and advanced to vice president of research
before his retirement in 1996. Dr. Miller continued to lend
his expertise as a consultant and serve as an instructor for
TRI's Professional Education Program until this past year.
Dr. Miller
maintained active involvement in a number of industry organizations
such as TAPPI, INDA, and the ACS. He is a past-president of
the Fiber Society and has served as their National Lecturer.
He was also an invited lecturer at Gordon Conferences on several
occasions. In 1977, Dr. Miller was awarded the Harold DeWitt
Smith Medal of the American Society for Testing and Materials
for his work on fiber and textile measurements. In 1993, he
was awarded the UK Textile Institute's S.G. Smith Memorial
Medal, given to those who have substantially furthered the
knowledge of physical and structural properties of fibers.
Call
for Papers
Proposals to submit a paper (oral presentations or posters)
must be submitted by June 1, 2002. Authors will be notified
by August 1 on the status of their abstract. Please email
your abstract to info@triprinceton.org
or complete the abstract submission form on the Symposium
Web page, http://www.triprinceton.org/miller.
Papers do not have to be directly based on Dr. Miller's work
but they should be inspired by his efforts. Oral presentations
and poster sessions will complement the invited lectures.
