Diane Cummins gained a BSc Ist Class Honors in Chemistry (1971) and a PhD in Inorganic Biochemistry (1974) from the University of Sheffield, UK. She is a highly respected research scientist and an accomplished business leader having a successful career in two global consumer goods companies.
In Unilever, Diane’s most notable scientific contributions were to the development and validation of novel toothpastes containing antibacterial agents for the prevention and control of dental plaque, gingivitis and periodontitis. Additionally, she was the first to recognise the value of Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy in dental research with a publication in 1993 on bacterial distribution in plaque biofilms. More recently, in Colgate, Diane’s diverse responsibilities included ensuring effective leverage of the latest scientific knowledge in its new product innovation process and that the claims made on its new oral care products are robustly supported by well-designed and well conducted clinical and laboratory studies. Her most notable scientific contributions were to the development and validation of novel arginine-based toothpastes for superior caries prevention and dentin hypersensitivity control.
Recently retired, Diane is now an independent consultant offering services to Oral Health researchers and the Oral Care industry.
Diane’s scientific and technology credentials are evidenced by ~100 peer reviewed scientific publications and 20 patents and patent applications. These credentials are balanced by strong marketing and management skills. She is also well regarded speaker with unique vision of science and technology transfer for business results.
