Samuel Presented at the EuroSun2026 Conference in Basel, Switzerland

Samuel gave a well-received podium presentation that considered the critical gap in how we currently evaluate sunscreens in light of our changing climate, and its direct impact on skin surface temperature.


Dr Samuel Gourion-Arsiquaud, TRI’s Director of Skin and BioSubstrates, attended the EuroSun2026 conference in Basel from 27th to 28th May, where he delivered a talk titled “Beyond SPF: A Spectroscopic Analysis of Sunscreen Efficacy and Safety in a Warming Climate”.



Several key aspects relating to the warming climate and sunscreen protection were covered, including:

  • The challenges for sunscreen formulation in the future, including the consideration that, while standard ex-vivo SPF testing is conducted at 32°C, real-world solar exposure in a warming climate easily pushes skin surface temperatures past 40°C.

  • Work that the TRI team have been doing through use of advanced vibrational spectroscopy to investigate the temperature-dependent behavior of organic UV filters. Importantly, they found that at 42°C, increased lipid fluidity within the stratum corneum significantly enhances the penetration of UV filters while decreasing surface retention—directly compromising both safety and efficacy. 

  • How next-generation formulations utilizing encapsulation, film formers, or bioadhesive molecules show vastly superior stability.
