Anyone involved in the development of cosmetic items in recent years will have likely noticed the current trend towards anti-aging, or even reversal of aging, products, with these claims increasingly being used as a marketing tool by beauty companies. However, a question we’re often asked at TRI is “how do you measure anti-aging effects?”. The TRI Principles of Skin Measurement Science and Claims course is an annual event, specifically designed to answer these kinds of questions. Register to attend live or online. The Principles of Skin Measurement Science and Claims course covers a wide range of skin claim areas, including skin anti-ageing. When it comes to skin aging claims the two metrics most frequently used are (i) skin appearance, which includes the presence of fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation, and (ii) skin dryness.
Skin Appearance Measurements Within Anti-Aging Claims
Within anti-aging claims substantiation, image analysis for facial mapping is rapidly becoming a key tool, and in many cases AI technologies are used to identify and monitor small changes within the skin structure and appearance. While at TRI we have developed 3D facial mapping using infra-red spectroscopy as a tool to measure and quantify the deposition, diffusion, and retention of topical actives on the face, as well as skin lipids and skin moisture levels, other approaches, such as that offered by QIMA Life Sciences, use image analysis. In these systems, clinically relevant properties such as the presence of hemoglobin and melanin under the skin’s surface can be measured and quantified, giving data that can be used in marketing claims and product validation. The imaging work undertaken by QIMA Life Science will be discussed at the Skin Course by Loïc Colomb, giving real insight into this rapidly changing field.

Skin Dryness: Beyond Simple Corneometer Measurements
Another commonly used metric for skin aging is the amount of water present in the skin, or, more simply, the absence of dryness. These data are often collected in combination with skin barrier function testing, as poor barrier function can lead to enhanced water loss and therefore dryness. As with images of the skin surface that can be analyzed, skin hydration can also be mapped and can reveal patterns and trends using color-based visualization. A leader in this field is Biox Systems, who will be present at the Skin Course, with Professor Perry Xiao presenting their instruments, as well as giving hints and tips for skin hydration data collection.
