This fourth TRI Talk of 2025/26 was given by Dr. Ernesta Malinauskyte and was a whistle-stop tour of the work that TRI has recently undertaken into the world of hair lipids. While Ernesta is greatly interested in this area, it’s also receiving a great deal of attention from the haircare industry, and the more that we learn about hair lipids, the more it’s becoming clear that they are a vital part of hair and scalp health.

TRI continued its tradition of excellence at the 79th Annual Scientific Meeting & Showcase of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC) in New York. Our booth was a vibrant hub of activity, where we reconnected with longtime collaborators and welcomed back former interns who are now thriving in their professional journeys. With over 45 expert speakers and 125+ posters, the meeting was a powerhouse of scientific exchange.

Martin gave an overview of the reasons for studying essential oil composition within plants, as well as the importance of identifying secondary metabolites formed as part of natural processes within the plant’s life cycle. Understanding the chemical structure was also touched upon, as a means for derivatization in later research for improving potency if necessary.

On November 3rd, TRI Princeton was invited to participate in the official opening of Grupo Boticário’s new Research and Science Center - a major milestone for the second-largest beauty company in Brazil. The event brought together more than 50 journalists, influencers, scientists, and industry leaders for a program focused on research, hair biology, and the future of hair-care innovation.

FIRST KEYNOTE SPEAKER ANNOUNCED: DR DUANE HARLAND, FROM THE BIOECONOMY SCIENCE INSTITUTE, NEW ZEALAND We are excited to announce our first keynote speaker for the 12 th TRI International Conference on Applied Hair Science. The second TRI Talk in the series is by Dr. Martin Zorde, a postdoctoral researcher at TRI, and will consider the use of plant extracts in the development of insect repellent products.  His talk will be titled, ‘Bioprospecting of Catmints and Sages: The Cat’s Meow of Natural Insect Repellents’.

TRI’s Dr Paul Cornwell (Director, Business Development) was awarded UK SCS Contributor of the Year 2025 Award at the SCS Dinner on Tuesday November 11th.

The annual TRI ‘Principles of Skin Measurements & Claims Course’ was, once again, a great success. Over 127 delegates attended, with a good mix of online and in-person attendees from a range of companies. As always, those who were from member companies were offered free places as part of their membership benefits. Engagement was excellent with many questions, igniting debate and conversation. 

Single fiber fatigue testing often yields substantially larger differences between samples, in terms of breakage tendences, than those obtained by traditional tensile testing. It also highlights the sizable contribution of previously unrecognized factors and considerations to the breakage process, which can be used to derive potential new strategies for breakage avoidance.

Dr Marcella Gabarra A. Leite went to the FLSCC Sunscreen Symposium in Florida to present both a poster entitled Evaluation of different formulation technologies to improve sunscreen efficacy and safety profiles using vibrational spectroscopy and a talk, The impact of external temperature on sunscreen efficacy and safety.

Several members of the TRI team attended the Innovations in Dermatological Sciences Conference at Rutgers on September 16 and 17.

TRI presented at two posters, Impact of Ozone exposure on the skin: new method to monitor in-vivo oxidative damages related to skin barrier alteration, and Relevant technologies to develop future sunscreen products with onger and safer photoprotection.  

The Société Française de Cosmétologie (SFC) is welcoming the world to the 35th IFSCC Congress at the Palais des Festivals, Cannes, September 15–18, 2025—a celebration of cosmetic science under the theme “The Future is Science.” As the congress brings together high-level talks, posters, and the latest ingredient and technology innovations, we’d love to meet you there!

The Principles of Skin Measurement Science & Claims course at TRI is designed for anyone involved in the development of new skin care products.  The intensive two-day programme is designed for anyone who needs to build their knowledge rapidly in the measurement techniques used in the development of new skin products and to support skin claims.

The 24th International Hair-Science Symposium, HairS’25, was held on 25-27th June 2025, in Augsburg, Germany.  TRI presented three oral presentations: Understanding the Consequences of Heat Styling: The Penetration of Sebum-Mimicking Compounds; Assessing Hair Bleaching: A Simple Approach Using Light Microscopy; and Bridging Consumer Perceptions and Technical Measurements: Assessing Hair Straightness and Alignment with Optical Imaging.
