Jessica gave an invited lecture at PACS that showcased TRI’s work on how sunscreens interact with skin, and why it matters.
Dr. Jessica Turner was invited to the recent Princeton American Chemical Society (PACS) section meeting to present an overview of the how sunscreens interact with the skin, which was based on works completed within the Skin and Biosubstrates team at TRI. As well as a giving background to TRI and what we do, she also provided a comprehensive overview of how the use of skin testing strategies can expand our understanding of the fate of UV filters after application.
Dr. Jessica turner, Staff Scientist at TRI Princeton

For example, she discussed how TRI uses a combination of ex vivo human skin, synthetic skin, and in vivo measurements to probe UV filter retention and permeation, especially when combined with powerful analytical techniques such chromatography and vibrational spectroscopy. She also highlighted areas that are typically overlooked, including temperature, barrier disruption, and UV filter formulation technologies. To end, she looked forward to the newest sunscreen research, including a discussion of the next-generation sunscreens that extend beyond UV protection alone, aligning product performance with long term skin safety and the practical realities of a changing climate.
Jessica’s lecture was well-received by those who attended, with a good contingent of the TRI team supporting. This was the second talk delivered to the PACS this year, with both talks important for highlighting the role that chemistry plays within the field of cosmetic science and raising the profile for how TRI bridges the gap between science and innovation.
To see Jessica’s abstract and slides, or to see other outputs from the TRI team, please head the TRI Library.
The TRI Library is an online repository of information, vital for the practising cosmetic scientists. Included are abstracts and presentations that TRI staff have given, videos of conferences and seminars that TRI has hosted, and key works and outputs that TRI staff have produced, such as journal articles and textbooks. Access to documents and videos is reserved for TRI member companies and library members.
Dr. David Graham, President of TRI Princeon introducing Jessica.
